Roadside Red

Remember 11:11, 11/11

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae, May 1915

Well, November is almost upon us and the year rolls on towards its end.

In this new globally warmed world, what will winter bring for the avid photographer? I do not expect alot of snow here in the UK. Recent winters have been pretty snowless with rain dominating the precipitation race. I don't mind rain at all, in fact as I heard recently, "There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes", however, water and cameras don't really go very well together. getting water in my precious Rebel XT is a nightmare which breaks me out in a sweat! lol

Winter sunshine on the other hand brings superb opportunities for good shots. The low angle of the light creates marvellous shadows and has a very cool tone to it. Of course, when it is sunny in the winter, it is usually bitter and decent gloves are a must, or deep warm pockets. Its important to remember to allow time for the camera to aclimatise to the conditions. Condensation is an enemy which is desperately avoided.

Wildlife becomes a lot more visable in winter. With the majority of the trees bare, it is easier to catch foraging birds and mammals. Squirrels and birds will gain a degree of bravery, especially if treats are laid out for them nearby. Even domestic animals behave in different ways in the colder weather - a wet dog shaking its coat or a cat playing in the snow can make excellent images. Watch for the steam as people and animals breathe the cold air.

Halloween, Bonfire Night (UK) Xmas, New Year etc are all great photo opportunities as people go about enjoying the festivities. I often use my point & shoot in order to grab candid images and avoid intruding on people as they celebrate. If people are engrossed they often don't even see your flash.

So wrap up warm and enjoy the season.

A contradiction. A jigsaw still in the box. Deep, yet shallow. Seriously funny.
